Most high school students consider a long term relationship the few years they’ve experienced with their significant other. How does twenty-five years sound for long term?
Mr. and Mrs. Maurer will be celebrating their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary this August.
Mr. Maurer holds down the discipline in the front office as our Assistant Principal while Mrs. Maurer takes lead as the head of the math department. It’s not typical to see a couple sharing the same place of employment but The Maurer’s have found a way to coincide in the same high school, managing a work relationship as well as a relationship away from work.
Mrs. Maurer said that working together doesn’t cause any problems for them because they rarely see one another during the work day. Mr. Maurer said that he try’s to tell Mrs. Maurer that he is really her “boss” but he says that he knows that is not the case and Mr. Maurer really knows that she’s the boss.
Everyone always questions how a love story begins; The Maurer’s story began while they were out dancing with friends. You would never think that the main disciplinarian of our school would have admitted that he struggled to muster up enough nerve to ask for that first dance but he proves that everyone has a soft spot.
“We met while we were out dancing with friends. I had to get up enough nerve to ask her to dance and it turned out to be one of the best things I have ever done,” said Mr. Maurer.
The Maurer’s soon expanded their family. They have three children and two grandsons. Cory, who blessed them with their two grandsons: Camden and Cannon. Their sons, Brandan and Shannan both attend Michigan State University .
Mr. and Mrs. Maurer made their decisions to become educators in very different ways. Mr. Maurer was a business owner for several years; he conducted seminars on safe chemical handling to law enforcement, fire departments, and farmers.
“Teaching was a fun challenge so I went into it for my second career,” said Mr. Maurer. Mr. Maurer was also our high school’s guidance counselor before he became the assistant principal.
Mrs. Maurer decided on a career as a math teacher because she likes math and she likes working with students. “I love to see students excited to learn,” said Mrs. Maurer. One perk of being a school teacher was that she was able to spend the summer with her children while they were young.
Some activities the Maurer’s enjoy together are boating in Grand Haven, traveling when they are able too, spending time with their family, and watching their grandchildren in sports.
After twenty-five years though they have learned that time for themselves is not a bad thing. Some activities Mrs. Maurer engages in to relax are being outdoors and gardening while Mr. Maurer takes a wilder approach. He says that he enjoys boating and scuba diving with his buddies but also says “we are seldom ever apart for more then a couple of days once or twice a year.”
It’s obvious that Mr. and Mrs. Maurer have found a way to make love last and enjoy all that life has blessed them with. Congratulations on twenty-five years.
