What steps will you take to make prom a night you'll never forget?

Written by: Mariah Rochester '12
Many people see prom as a one-night event full of fancy clothes and dancing, but really, prom takes months and long hours of planning.
Prom is the last big dance for seniors before graduation. Some schools have the seniors plan prom, as a way for them to get together one last time and do something, but other schools have juniors plan prom for the seniors as a farewell. Whether the seniors or juniors plan it though, prom is much more than it seems.
Planning for prom begins about a year in advance to ensure that there will be enough time to get everything done. Fundraising, shopping, and handmade creations all go towards decorating for the dance. The venue and theme have to be decided, as well as how the venue will be decorated for the theme. Thousands of dollars can be spent on this one, last dance.
While the planning for the dance itself, students who are planning to attend the event are planning in their own way for the dance. Many girls pay for tanning packages in order to have a summer glow for the dance, while some just pay to get a spray tan. Girls begin dress shopping many months in advance just to find that perfect dress for the evening.
Dresses for prom can range greatly in price, and the pricier it is, the more elaborate it is. Whether it is sleek and fitting, a ball gown, patterned, plain, or encrusted with rhinestones, the dress is the most important part of prom for girls. Everyone looks for something that they believe no one else will have, and are willing to break the bank in order to get it.
During the time that girls are dress shopping, guys patiently wait until they know what color to get for their tux. When couples go tux shopping, girls will spend as much time picking out a tie and vest as they do buying a dress. Guys are typically expected to buy the tickets for the dance as well as provide transportation and pay for dinner at a nice restaurant.
On the day of prom, girls wake up bright and early to begin getting ready. They go to get their nails done, and spend hours having their hair styled. After that, they have to fight their way into their dress and make sure it lies perfectly at all times.
Couples get together to pin on boutonnieres and put on corsages. Many pictures are taken by parents as they begin to grasp the idea that their children are grown up. Pictures can last up to an hour and are taken before the departure for dinner.
Dinner follows the pictures and is expected to be at a nice, sit-down restaurant. Dinner is a time for couples and friends to enjoy and create memories that they will never forget. After dinner, students head to the dance for four long hours of music and fun.
Prom is an occasion for everyone to come together and have a good time one last time, and the memories are something that will be cherished for years. Prom is the last hoorah for seniors to wrap up the life they have been living for the last four years of their lives.
